I worked as a webmaster for 13 years and during that time learned a lot of do's and don'ts about putting up a professional website.

Web Hosting: I have tried several providers and by far the most consistently reliable for value and customer service is Host4Profit. CLICK FOR INFORMATION.
Yes they cost more than GoDaddy or similar, but in my experience (with several web clients) godaddy is a nightmare. It takes hours to figure out how to get anything done and the constant attempts to upsell are extremely annoying.

If you just wat a good, professional site that offers everything you might need (for ONE price, no upsells), then skip the bargain-hunting, and go direct to Host4Profit. I have used them for 12 years with ZERO problems for dozens of websites.

The best source to learn HTML is HTML Goodies .. tons of free information written by a University professor who knows how to explain everything in a clear, non-geek manner.

For professional web design software, I recommend Dreamweaver by Adobe. I also recommend you avoid MS Frontpage like the plague :-)) Just a word to the wise ;)

Most of the people I work with had me put their sites up initially then they are free to work with the site content on their own using Contribute which works with Dreamweaver. If you decide to do it this way, you won't need to purchase Dreamweaver (which costs several hundred dollars), just Contribute ($129 the last time I checked)
